SHOW ME THE MONEY!

The National Research Foundation (NRF) has allocated S$500 million over the next five years to fund the development of a strategic Interactive Digital Media (IDM) research programme to support Singapore’s long-term vision of growing into a global IDM capital.


The programme aims to realise a value-added contribution of S$10 billion, up from S$3.8 billion in 2003, as well as create approximately 10, 000 new jobs by 2015.

General research in IDM is under the purview of the MDA while research on the use of IDM in education is spearheaded by the Ministry of Education.

Singapore's interactive digital media industry has been given a shot in the arm with the announcement that the sector's R&D Programme Office will fund four interlinked initiatives.

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan said the initiatives aim to create a high-growth and self-sustaining eco-system which will propel Singapore into the forefront of research and development in interactive digital media.

The interactive digital media industry had been identified as a key growth sector for Singapore's economy in the years ahead by the high-powered Research, Innovation and Enterprise Council during its inaugural meeting last year, which was chaired by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
